The Magic of Coffee

My morning cuppa is one of the main reasons why I love my morning routine. Waking up to the fresh smell of coffee wafting through my apartment makes me want to pause, sit back and cherish this quiet morning time. My thoughts and I get to have a date with a coffee. During this time I breathe deeply, write three things I am grateful for and set my intention for the day. This “me time” with my cuppa grounds me and I feel energised and more prepared for a day ahead, ready to face any obstacles with calm.

At work, among my colleagues, I have a reputation of being a wellness junky and when I'm seen drinking my morning coffee I often get a few raised eyebrows. Coffee, like many other healthy foods, has been given a ‘bad rap’ thus I am often faced with comments like “I thought coffee is bad for your health” or “Haven’t you heard of the dangers of caffeine?” or “You drink coffee?!”

Let’s set the record straight once and for all…. one or two cups off good quality coffee isn’t a bad thing. In fact, coffee has a variety of health benefits and can definitely be part of your healthy lifestyle.

Let’s cut to the chase…

Coffee not only makes your morning routine more mindful but also improves happiness.

A cup of coffee triggers the release of dopamine - a feel good hormone.

Coffee is a powerhouse for antioxidants

Coffee is the World’s biggest source of polyphenol antioxidants, which means it has powerful anti-aging effects. In fact, coffee beans contain more antioxidant than most fruit and vegetables.

Coffee lowers the risk of chronic diseases

Numerous studies have linked coffee to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, as well as liver disease.

I AM OFTEN ASKED

WHEN, HOW MUCH AND WHAT COFFE TO DRINK

Rule number one.

Don’t drink your coffee as soon as you wake up as your cortisol levels (stress hormone levels) are highest around this time so your body doesn’t need this extra stimulation to wake itself up. Wait at least an hour to get that first sip of coffee in the morning.

Rule number two.

When shopping for your coffee only buy organic coffee as otherwise you will be injecting high levels of pesticides with each sip of your coffee.

Rule number three.

Make sure your coffee is mycotoxin-free. I use limitless brand

Rule number four.

Limit your coffee consumption to one or two cups a day.

Rule number five.

Don’t drink decaf. Most brands for their decaf version use the lowest quality beans with high amount of toxins (caused by mold growth and other chemicals).

Don’t forget to upgrade your morning with this coffee...

BULLETPROOF COFFEE WITH A TWIST RECIPE:

  • Add 1/4 tsp of cinnamon and a pinch of turmeric to give your coffee super, anti-inflammatory powers.
  • Brew the coffee with cinnamon and turmeric using preferred method. I use a French press.
  • Using a blender, blend in 1 unsalted, grass-fed butter (I use Kerrygold), 1 tbsp. Brain Octane or  MCT oil, 1 or 2 raw pastured eggs (optional), 1tbs of gelatin (I use Great Lakes Unflavoured Gelatine).
  • After blending all the ingredients for 30 seconds you should end up with super creamy yumminess. This morning upgrade will keep you energise, happy and full for hours.

Remember.....

fat is our body and brain's super fuel, so instead of a regular cup of coffee try bulletproof coffee with a twist for better cognitive function and more reliable energy throughout the day.
